Can I turn my long run into a workout?

Q: Can I incorporate a tempo run into my long run?

I’d like to get some more speed work in during the week, and that seems like a place to do it.

A: Your long run should be your long run only and not double as a workout, or else you could potentially overtrain yourself. The long run and tempo run have separate purposes, so I wouldn’t advise putting them together. Remember that recovery is just as important as hard training; resist the urge to overdo it!
